About the activity
As well as improving English language the Summer School is committed to the all round experience of students. Teamwork is the key in this raft building challenge, with 3 different elements calling on different skills and knowledge, only groups who make use of each member’s qualities will emerge victorious!
This event is perfect for team building, due to the various skills required to succeed. There is also the element of competition when more than one team is involved, which generally encourages teamwork.
The event is made up of 3 stages: Kit Retrieval, Design, Build & Test, Race
Brief : Students must acquire the necessary equipment to build a raft which can carry the entire team around the designated course and back to the launch site.
Kit Retrieval – Each team must collect specific kit from the island in the middle of the lake which is needed to build their raft. They are provided with an open canoe and 2 paddles. There must be 2 team mates on each trip to the island, and every member of the team must go to the island at least once, until all the relevant equipment is collected.
Design, Build & Test – Each team must now use the kit they have gathered to construct a raft capable of supporting the entire team around the island and back to shore. They must test the raft during this time.
Race – Starting positions are decided during the first 2 stages. The entire team must be on the raft throughout the race and all the kit must make it around the Island and back to the beach.
